Virginia Youth Advisory Council

VYAC (Virginia Youth Advisory Council) is a statewide advocacy organization of youth in foster care that communicates and shares information with each other and concerned community stakeholders. The Council will:

  • Empower youth to have a positive voice in their communities;
  • Develop skills necessary for lifelong learning and success in the future;
  • Provide an opportunity to network with other youth; and
  • Provide independent living information about issues that will motivate youth to become self-sufficient in
    the community

Why should I join VYAC?
There are opportunities to travel, learn about advocacy, leadership and develop public speaking skills. Along the way you can form great friendships and lifelong connections. In addition to having great times, it looks great on a resume and college application.

What are the requirements to join VYAC?

  • Foster youth between the ages of 14-21
  • Attended three regional events, in the course of one year
  • Receive recommendation from Independent Living Consultant
  • Positively share the mission of the youth council
  • Have a passion and desire to see change within
Regional Youth Councils

Regional Youth Councils will be established to expand VYAC’s structure and focus to include representatives from the five regions in Virginia. The Regional Youth Councils meet regularly to identify local needs, plan activities and increase the voice of youth in the foster care system. The five councils are in the Northern, Eastern, Piedmont, Central and Western regions
