Meet Jean. Jean has been in foster care for two years. She is 17 years old, and has just begun her last year of high school. Jean has been working hard the past couple of years by taking college level courses her freshman year, winning first place in Virginia for Fashion Construction, and gaining many plaques, trophies, and certificates for her academic achievements. In addition, Jean has achieved several non-school related accomplishments that she is proud of including learning that doing well is better than doing bad and taking care of her nephews. When she graduates, Jean plans on attending community college for a general studies diploma, then later earning a degree in law or psychology.
When she isn’t working hard, Jean enjoys reading, spending time with her friends, and listening to music. Jean has also used some of her spare time to get involved with Project LIFE by attending conferences, speaking at events, and she currently is working on becoming a member of Virginia’s youth advisory council, SPEAKOUT. Her favorite part about being involved with Project LIFE is meeting other people. In doing so, she understands now that she’s not alone. In her own words, “every child deserves to know the love of a forever family and every family deserves the chance to thrive.”
Jean offers some of advice to youth in foster care, “God put you here for a reason. Now it is time to find it until he tells you to go home. Give those who are helping a chance, it isn’t too bad after all”.
Jean exemplifies optimism and wisdom. Keep being an inspiration and being the shining light for others, Jean!
