Meet Christian. He is 16 and has been in foster care since he was 13 years of age. Christian is approaching his junior year and is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at his high school. This past school year he has maintained an A average throughout his enrollment in the IB program, earning him recognition in the National Honor Society.
Once Christian is complete with high school, he plans on going to a four-year university to major in psychiatry. Christian states,” I enjoy learning about why people do the things that they do. The mind fascinates me. Also, I enjoy the field of chemistry, and learning how different medicines affect the brain. I plan to make a career out of it.”
Christian stays quite busy due to school and by participating at a local theater group that occasionally performs plays and musicals to the community. Recently he has been inducted into International Thespian Society, an achievement that recognizes talented students of theater. When Christian is not busy entertaining the locals, in his free time he also enjoys additional activities of the arts; like drawing, painting and sculpting.
Those who come into contact with Christian including his worker has stated that “Christian is kind and very respectful as well as demonstrates excellent leadership and mentorship skills.” At the recent Project LIFE Youth Statewide Conference, Christian was recognized for “Most Likely to Become President” by his peers. The few instances Christian has participated in Project LIFE events, he has displayed a great ability to advocate for others. Christian states “I love how Project LIFE is all inclusive. It involves foster care youth and alumni with an outlet to be able to come together and do better for themselves and others. Also, it shows that there are others out there like you, which is always nice.” In one word Christian describes Project LIFE as, “influential because it changes the system and those involved in it for the better.”
To those in foster care Christian wanted to share with you all, “This part of your life is only the beginning of your story. Only you can determine your ending, so give your story the best ending that you can.” We are so inspired by your success and we look forward to watching where your successes take you, Christian!
